Once the domain of huge co-ops making so-so wine, Puglia has been improving by leaps and bounds over the last few years. Even better news, the wines are a great value in a country where Tuscany and Piedmont lead the industry. Today, skilled vintners working in modernized wineries are making much better products in DOCs across Puglia. Look for wines from Alezio, Brindisi, Salice Salentino, Leverano, Matino, Nardo, Squinzano, Gravino and Copertino, where hefty black grapes like Primitivo, Uva di Troia, Greco Nero, Malvasia Nera and Negroamaro flourish. The 2005 Riserva is a blend of 95% Negroamaro and 5% Malvasia Nera from vineyards in Copertino, a small town in the center of Salento in Italy's heel.
Flavor Profile: Fuller medium-bodied, dry. This is 8 year-old wine has aged wonderfully. A nice ripe nose of dried fruit followed by a structured palate of black fig, earth, and some dark cherry. The finish keeps you coming back for more: tannic, dry, dusty, and a little funky. Pair with grilled and roasted red meat, pasta dishes, strong cheeses.
